Relationship & couples counselling
Couples therapy and marriage counselling are a core part of Dr Malkin’s work. He sees couples at all stages — from the early-relationship navigation of differences, through to long-term couples working through difficult transitions, infidelity, communication breakdowns or considering separation. Sessions provide a structured, neutral space where both partners can speak and be heard.
Anxiety & stress management
Generalised anxiety, social anxiety, panic, work-related stress, sleep difficulties — anxiety presents in many forms. Dr Malkin combines CBT, relaxation techniques, mindfulness and where useful, hypnotherapy, to help clients regain a sense of control and equilibrium.
Depression counselling
Depression is often layered — biological, situational, relational, existential. Dr Malkin works to understand each client’s specific picture rather than applying a generic treatment protocol. Sessions aim not just at symptom relief but at the underlying patterns that keep depression returning.
Phobias, fears & trauma
Specific phobias, performance anxiety, and post-traumatic responses respond well to focused therapeutic work. Dr Malkin uses a combination of cognitive techniques, gradual exposure and (where appropriate) hypnotherapy.
Addictions & problem behaviours
Drawing on ten years’ practice in drug and alcohol clinics, Dr Malkin works with alcohol, drug, gambling and behavioural addictions — both with the individual and, where helpful, with affected family members.
Life transitions & coaching
Career change, retirement, divorce, bereavement, becoming a parent, mid-life reorientation — significant transitions often surface unresolved material and call for a fresh look at how we want to live. Dr Malkin’s coaching work focuses on practical clarity and sustainable change.
About Dr David Malkin
Dr Malkin’s path into clinical psychology was not direct — earlier careers in hospital pharmacy, social work and teaching all inform the way he works today. He completed his M.Psych. in Clinical Psychology and his Ph.D. at the University of Western Australia, and spent six years as a Senior Clinical Psychologist in prisons, followed by six years in general and psychiatric hospitals, and ten years in drug and alcohol services — before establishing his private psychotherapy practice in Claremont over 30 years ago.
That breadth of experience shapes the work. Dr Malkin doesn’t operate from a single school or method — he draws on whatever serves the client in front of him. The goal is always practical: not just insight, but change you can feel and sustain.
Sessions, fees & Medicare
Sessions are 50–60 minutes. New clients are welcome — no referral required. If you would like to claim a Medicare rebate, you’ll need a Mental Health Treatment Plan from your GP. Telehealth sessions are available via Skype or WhatsApp for those who can’t attend in person.
For current fees and to discuss whether Dr Malkin’s approach is the right fit for you, please get in touch by phone — that’s the simplest way to have a brief, no-pressure conversation before booking.
